San Diego with kids

San Diego is three different water experiences within twenty minutes of each other, and that difference matters more than any list of attractions. Getting it right shapes the whole week.

Places below were checked against their own sources on 12 August 2026. Hours change. Anything time-sensitive links to the venue so you can confirm it on the morning it matters.

Orientation, and how far things really are

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach sit on a sandbar with the open Pacific on one side and Mission Bay on the other, walkable end to end along the boardwalk. That geography is the reason a single base works here: you get calm water and surf within a few blocks.

North is La Jolla, ten to twenty minutes by car, with the village, the cove, the tide pools and the seals. South across the bay is Ocean Beach, less polished and more local. Inland and south is Balboa Park, fifteen to twenty five minutes, holding the zoo, the Fleet Science Center and the museums. Coronado is twenty five to thirty minutes over the bridge. Carlsbad and Escondido, for Legoland and the Safari Park, are the northern edge at thirty to forty five minutes.

Treat those as orientation rather than as your numbers. The drive that decides your day is the one from your own front door at the hour you are actually leaving, which is the thing a map estimate will not tell you and the reason we time every journey from the accommodation when we build a guide for one family.

The water, which is really three different decisions

The single most useful thing to know about San Diego with small children is that "the beach" is not one thing here.

• Calm bay. Mission Bay, including De Anza Cove, is sheltered, warmer and slow moving. This is the answer for a baby or a very cautious toddler, and it is the one most visitor guides skip entirely.
• Open Pacific, gentle. La Jolla Shores and Coronado Central Beach are the two easiest swimmable ocean beaches for young children: wide flat sand, small waves.
• Rocky and tide dependent. La Jolla Cove, the Children's Pool and the tide pools along Coast Boulevard reward a low tide visit and are close to pointless outside one. La Jolla's tide range swings around eight feet in a single day, and it is the negative low tides that expose the pools.

Check the actual tide before a tide-pool trip rather than picking a time that suits the day. NOAA publishes predictions for station 9410230 at Scripps Pier in La Jolla, which is the right station for this stretch of coast.

For water quality, the county publishes live advisories and closures at sdbeachinfo.com, updated the moment a beach status changes. That is the source to check, not a blog and not a review.

Getting around and parking

A car is close to essential for anything past Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, which are genuinely walkable. Beach-adjacent street parking in La Jolla and Coronado fills by mid-morning at weekends, so either start early or accept that you will circle. In a beach town where street parking is this tight, accommodation with its own gated parking is worth more than it sounds on a listing.

When to go

September is the sweet spot: past the summer crowd peak, water and air both still warm, and dry. It is also outside gray whale season, which runs roughly December to April, so a September whale-watching trip is not worth booking regardless of how it is sold to you. NOAA's gray whale page covers the migration timing.

Watch opening hours across the season change rather than assuming a fixed schedule. SeaWorld is the clearest example: summer hours ran to 10pm daily, then dropped in August to roughly 10am to 6pm on weekdays with later Friday and Saturday closes, and weekday closing tightens further through September. Any specific hours you read anywhere, including here, will be wrong within weeks. Check their calendar for your actual date.

Closing days worth knowing before you plan a day around them

These are the ones that catch families out, because a well-reviewed place that is shut on the day you go is worse than a mediocre place that is open.

The Belmont Park row is the one people trip over. The park being open does not mean the ride your child came for is running, and named attractions are listed as closed on specific dates on their own calendar.

What we ruled out, and why

The places left out of a guide are as much a finding as the places in it. From this research pass:

• Rocky's Crown Pub. A genuine cult favourite for burgers, and 21 and over. Not viable with children whatever the food is like.
• Sushi Ota. Excellent and not built for young children: no children's menu, no family provision, and dinner-only at weekends.
• The Marine Room. Same reasoning, plus a 5pm dinner-only start that collides with most small children's evenings.
• Flap Your Jacks. The tabletop-griddle pancake place that appears on plenty of still-live family lists closed permanently in September 2025. We could not find a substitute offering the same cook-your-own format, so treat it as a gap rather than as something to replace.
• USS Midway Museum. Genuinely iconic and a poor fit with a stroller or a very young child, because of narrow gangways and ladders. Worth it for families past that stage.
• Whale watching in September. Off-season, as above.

The local read

Pacific Beach's boardwalk covers breakfast and casual dinner within walking distance of most accommodation there, which means a car trip is really only needed for La Jolla, Balboa Park, Ocean Beach, Coronado and the northern day trips. That single fact does more for a week with small children than any individual restaurant recommendation.

La Jolla has enough good "nicer dinner" options that you rarely need more than one. Above roughly 4.3 on any rating scale, choosing by seating style, whether you want a patio, an ocean view or somewhere casual, matters far more than choosing by score. Ocean Beach reads as the less manicured, more local counterpart to both La Jolla and Pacific Beach.

Balboa Park deserves a note on stamina rather than logistics. The zoo, the Fleet Science Center and the museums sit close enough together that two of them bundle into one day at no extra driving, which is the efficient move and also the one most likely to produce a meltdown at four in the afternoon.

What this page deliberately does not do

Nothing above is timed from your front door, built around your children's ages, or checked against your specific dates. This is the half of the research that stays true for everyone going to San Diego. The other half only exists once we know who is travelling and where they are sleeping, and that is what a guide is.
