Amsterdam is not in the region you would guess

The Netherlands splits its school holidays across three regions: Noord, Midden and Zuid. The summer holidays are staggered on purpose so that the whole country does not set off on the same Saturday.

Amsterdam is in regio Noord. Not Midden, despite sitting in the middle of the map. The province of Noord-Holland belongs to Noord in its entirety, so every primary and secondary school in the municipality follows the Noord calendar. If you look up "Dutch school holidays" and read the first set of dates you find, there is a real chance you are reading the wrong region by a week or two.

Regio Noord, 2026 to 2027

These are the published dates for the school year running from September 2026, checked against the government's own list on 1 September 2026.

Every one of those runs Saturday to Sunday inclusive, which is the Dutch convention and means the holiday is a fortnight of weekends rather than a clean set of weeks.

Two patterns are worth pulling out. Amsterdam goes first in autumn and first in summer, a week ahead of the rest of the country both times. And it goes second in spring, a week behind Zuid.

The busiest weekend, and the Monday after it

The single most useful line in the whole calendar is the end of the Noord summer holiday.

The last weekend of that window is the busiest few days of the summer in Amsterdam. Everyone is back from wherever they went, the weather is usually still good, and the city's own families are spending their last free days in it. In 2027 that is Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August.

Then, on the Monday, it stops. Amsterdam's children go back to school on 23 August 2027, and the playgrounds, the neighbourhood parks, the paddling pools and the family museums empty out almost overnight while the weather is still warm. For a family with a toddler this is the best week of the Amsterdam summer, and it is invisible unless you know to look for it.

Be precise about what empties, though. Regio Midden is off until 29 August and Zuid until 5 September, so Dutch families from the rest of the country are still travelling, and the big draws in the centre stay busy. What empties is the local layer: the places Amsterdam's own children use. That is exactly the layer a family with young children spends its week in, which is why the effect is much larger than it sounds.

The same trick works in reverse in October. Amsterdam is on holiday from 10 to 18 October 2026 while Midden and Zuid are still at school, so that is a week to avoid if you want quiet playgrounds and a week to choose if you want the city's own family events running.

The May holiday is the one to plan hardest around

The May holiday is the outlier, and it catches people twice.

First, it is not staggered. All three regions take the same week, 24 April to 2 May 2027, so the entire country is off at once. Nothing else in the calendar does that except Christmas.

Second, King's Day falls inside it. 27 April 2027 is a Tuesday, and King's Day only moves when it lands on a Sunday, so it stays put. Amsterdam on King's Day is the largest street party in the country: the whole city is orange, the canals are full of boats, and much of the centre is closed to traffic and packed shoulder to shoulder from morning onwards.

That is a wonderful thing to see once and a hard day with a stroller. If you are travelling with a child under about five, decide deliberately whether you are there for it or avoiding it, because there is no version where you are in Amsterdam that day and unaffected by it.

Not every date here is fixed

This distinction is not widely known and it changes how much weight to put on the table above.

The summer, Christmas and May holidays are set by the government and a school cannot move them. The autumn and spring holidays are advisory dates issued by the education ministry, and a school may deviate from them if its governing board agrees and the change is recorded in the school plan.

In practice most schools follow the advice. But if your trip is built around the autumn or spring window and a few days either way matters, the school's own calendar is the authority, not the national table.

What this actually means for picking a week

Ranked by how much difference it makes:

1. Avoid the last weekend of the Noord summer holiday if you want a calm trip, and aim for the week straight after it if you want the warmest quiet week of the year.
2. Treat the May holiday as a decision, not a date. All three regions plus King's Day in one week is the busiest the city gets.
3. Check the autumn dates against your own month. Amsterdam's autumn week runs before the rest of the country's, so "the Dutch half-term" is two different weeks depending on who you ask.
4. Ignore 15 August. It is not a public holiday in the Netherlands, whatever a European holiday calendar tells you, and nothing closes for it.
5. Check the year, not this page. These dates are correct for 2026 and 2027 and they move every year. The government publishes them well in advance.

None of this is on a tourist site because it is not written for visitors. It is written for Dutch parents, in Dutch, by the education ministry, which is exactly why it is worth knowing.
